Localization Challenges

In today’s world every organization is seeking to increase its global presence and increased market share, however the ways to achieve that might be different from organization to organization. But there are organizations which are still adhering to the old L10 practices by using the same tools and technique, limited translators and domains etc. just to avoid the risk of losing business.

Adhering to the old standard L10 approach can be a safe approach to move ahead for startup organizations but to have a big advantage you need to step out of the standard L10 approach and take some calculated risks and perform innovatively. But to bring on innovation is not a cake walk as being a global player there are various challenges which an organization needs to face, such as:

Different cultures - In being global the main challenge for any organization is the cultural differences across the globe. Before moving to any region, you need to study the local culture first because without connecting to the culture you would not be able to connect to the local residents which you are targeting to be your customers.

Products or services with the local cultural flair would negate the possibility of anonymity which a customer can feel if it does not have a local feel.

Technical challenges

Expansion – It is one of the major problem while doing the translation in any language. For e.g. Translation of the term “re do” in German language is “Wiederherstellen” which has 16 characters whereas the source text contains only 5 characters, means more than 300% increase in translation. This type of issue creates a lot of difficulty when it needs to be used in mobiles or on any other platform where there is a length restriction.

Bi-directional languages – Now a days when CAT tools are used in almost all translation tasks, there are some bi-directional languages in which text is written from right to left direction may not be supported by third party applications due to their incompatibility which may result in high conversion cost.

Fonts – Different fonts are used for different languages for proper appearance but they are limited to a set of scripts. Thus proper fonts should be used during translation and DTP otherwise that may lead to visual aberrations.

Abbreviations – Usually abbreviations are used where the provided space for translation is limited like mobile content translation etc. But in some languages abbreviations are not commonly used and even if abbreviation is done to fit into the provided space, the segment can become meaningless or may be offensive.

Accuracy – This is the most important aspect of translation, it should not be considered as a challenge as this is the first priority to yield the quality product or service and there should be no compromise in it. But the challenge is to be very careful as one needs to be well familiar with latest translation trends, terminologies, style etc.

A tiny error can be fatal as mistranslation can lead to some other meaning or may be the sentence can become offensive one.

In the midst of various challenges, localization industry is still one of the fastest growing industry in the world.
